When Sam was a senior in college, his roommate (Ian) wanted nothing more than to be a dentist. Ian came across tape art as a way to practice his ‘manual dexterity’ (aka, poking your gums and cleaning your teeth with a sharp tool). He asked Sam if he’d explore tape art with him - they spent 48 hours straight taking over his bedroom walls with over 50 rolls of washi tape.
Almost a decade later, Sam is one of only a few professional artists serving as a conduit for tape as a fine art medium. Sam has showcased original works in acclaimed art shows across the US, and prioritizes education of his art form through online courses.
It is also important to note that his college roommate has, in fact, become a dentist.
“Tape art, much like humanity, is ephemeral. If neither I nor my art is here to stay, then I’m going to find as much joy in it for myself as I can, and inspire joy for others. The day I no longer find joy, is the day I do something else.”
